The Ambassador of Nigeria to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Ambassador (Dr) Adamu Mohammed ABDULHAMID has been elected as the Chairperson of the WTO Trade Policy Review Body for the 2024/2025 period.
A statement by the Director (Information and Public Relations) of the Federal Ministry of Industry Trade and Investment, Adebayo Thomas, said the Ambassador took over on Wednesday, 24th April 2024 at the WTO, Geneva, Switzerland.
The statement said "This appointment reflects Nigeria’s commitment to advancing its trade relations on the global stage.
"As the new Chairperson of the WTO Trade Policy Review Body, Dr. Abdulhamid will play a
crucial role in overseeing the review of trade policies and practices of WTO member countries.
"His leadership will contribute to shaping international trade policies and promoting fair and transparent trade practices worldwide.
"Congratulations to Dr. Adamu Mohammed Abdulhamid on this significant appointment," it stated.
Prior to this role, Dr. Abdulhamid served as the Acting Head/Charge d’ Affaires of Nigeria’s Trade Office to the WTO in Geneva, Switzerland.
His extensive experience in world trade matters and trade negotiations spans 28 years.
Notably, he was also the campaign
coordinator for Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala during her bid for the position of WTO Director-General.
Additionally, under the leadership of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the WTO has elected Dr. Adamu Mohammed Abdulhamid as the Chairman of the Trade Facilitation Committee
from 2022-2023.
