*Launches FRSC Mobile App, Nat. Crash Reporting Information System
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has disclosed that 2776 persons have died from road crashes in the country between January and July, 2024.
Within the same period, he said, 16,309 persons were also injured.
He spoke in Abuja during the launching of the FRSC Mobile App and National Crash Reporting Information System (NACRIS).
He also that 5,081 Nigerians died from road crashes in the country between January and December, 2023.
According to him, the launching of the FRSC Mobile App and National Crash Reporting Information System will go a long way to reduce road crashes in the country.
He said "I am aware of the ongoing digital transformation of operational activities in the Corps geared towards improving the administration of the Corps to deliver on its mandate The Corps Marshal has earlier emphasized during his maiden address to FRSC staff that one of the cardinal objectives of his administration was to digitalize the operations of the Corps.
"Today is in deed another milestone in the annals of the Corps as we witness the launch of the FRSC Mobile App and NACRIS which is intended to raise awareness and sensitize both drivers and passengers on the potential causative factors of road traffic crashes (RTC).
"The launch of these two digital platforms is a testimony to the fact that the Corps Marshal is not only committed to fulfilling his promises. It is also another giant stride in the effort of the Corps at implementing policies aimed at creating a safer motoring environment and reducing crash-related injuries and death on our highways
The SGF added "Data on road traffic crashes reveal that between Jan and Dec 2023, road traffic crashes have consumed the lives of 5,081 Nigerians and that a total of 31,874 Nigerians were injured in the period under review.
"Furthermore, between Jan-July 2024, 2,776 persons were killed and 16,309 injured as a result of road traffic. Against the fact that the FRSC has been innovative at implementing measures against reckless driving and improper road use, these figures call for concern from both Government and non- Governmental stakeholders on road safety. It also reminds us of the need for more effort and urgent action towards reducing the figures to its barest minimum."
He said that the FRSC Mobile App is a software application developed specifically for use on small wireless device such as smart phones.
The innovation, he noted, is capable of breaking new grounds in the operational capacity of the FRSC.
"I must commend the FRSC for this effort. I was also informed that FRSC Mobile App has capacity to deliver the following products amongst others:
"Issuing Eye witness Report, Emergency Reporting, Detecting excess Speed and alerting both drivers and Passengers, Detecting black spots and other dangerous spot on the road
"Motorists could also use the App to verify when their drivers licence or vehicle papers have expired, Motorists and other holders of the FRSC Mobile App could also access the National Traffic Radio, amongst other relevant features aimed at ensuring safer roads and fuller lives."
The SGF explained that the FRSC Mobile App and the digitalization of the National Crash Reporting Information System is a well thought- out road safety policy that would require inputs from road safety officers and men as well as other road users.
"This is expected to strengthen the commitment of vehicle users and the traffic law enforcement officers to contribute positively to road safety related issues.
"I wish to commend the effort of the FRSC Management in aligning with the vision of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on the Renewed Hope agenda aimed at digital transformation and economic growth of the nation.
"Permit me to also put on record that Federal Government is committed to ensuring that these projects are sustained through adequate support for the benefit of Nigerians." he stated
