Amnesty International has called for the immediate and unconditional release of five Kano-based activists.
They were detained following their honouring police invitation.
The activists, including Comrade Abdulmajid Yakubu Daudu, National Chairman of the Nigeria Patriotic Front Movement (NPFM), Barr. Yusha’u Sani Yankuzo, Barr. Amina Bello, Sani NaRogo, Comrade Anas, and Comrade Abdullahi.
In detention, they had their mobile phones confiscated.
In a statement, Amnesty International urged Nigerian authorities to ensure the activists’ safety and grant them access to legal representation and family.
It also condemned the arrests as it described it as part of a troubling trend of repression against individuals exercising their rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.
The statement reads “Targeting activists for exercising their right to freedom of expression must stop,”
Amnesty International called on the Nigerian government to uphold constitutional and international human rights obligations, allowing all citizens to freely exercise their rights.
