For economic diversification and sustainable growth, the Federal Government through the Ministry of Steel Development on Tuesday, 18th February 2025 in Abuja moved to enhance collaboration with Development Partners and International Donor Agencies operating in Nigeria.
This strategic partnership, according to the Ministry, is aimed at unlocking the full potential of Nigeria’s steel sector, driving economic diversification, job creation, and sustainable development.
The Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shaiubu Abubakar Audu, at the occasion, recognized the crucial role that Development Partners and International Donor Agencies (IDAs) play in supporting key sectors, including infrastructure development, skills training, and technological advancements.
The partnership, he said, seeks to leverage the expertise and resources of the agencies to bolster the development of a robust and competitive steel industry, ultimately contributing to the nation's overall growth.
In a statement by Assistant Director (Information/ Public Relations), Tine-Iulun M.A, on behalf of Head (Press & PR), the Minister said "Your partnership can accelerate the modernization of our steel assets, build the required infrastructure, empower our workforce with the skills of tomorrow, and fortify the regulatory frameworks that will underpin our industry’s growth.
"Together, we have the opportunity to create a legacy of sustainable development, job creation, and industrial innovation that will resonate across generations".
According to him, the partnership is essential for bridging the gap between ambitious vision and the practical realities of implementation.
By supporting the revitalization of key steel assets and infrastructure, investing in capacity development, and championing regulatory and trade reforms, the Minister said, the partners would be contributing to a cause that is not only about industrial progress but national rejuvenation.
He stressed that the partners commitment will help unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s steel sector, reduce the country's reliance on imports, fostering local innovation, and position the nation as a beacon of industrial excellence in Africa and beyond.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Chris Osa Isokpunwu reiterated the Ministry's need for prospective partners who will help address the daunting task facing the sector.
The partnership, he noted, will ultimately contribute to building a more prosperous and sustainable future for all Nigerians.
In her remarks, the Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Leilani Bin-Juda welcomed the initiative by the Ministry for synergy.
She stated that Australia is committed to supporting Nigeria's steel development Agenda.
A strong steel sector, she said, is fundamental to achieving economic diversification and sustainable growth.
To this end, she said "we look forward to working closely with the Ministry to achieve these shared goals."
Speaking, Resident Representative of United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, who was represented by Udumma Nwokike, Climate Change Programme Analyst, UNDP, disclosed that UNDP is open for collaboration and partnership as the areas the Ministry is seeking to collaborate, fully aligns with UNDP's vision.
Also, Dr. Osuji Otu, from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization stated that UNIDO is committed to partner with the Ministry to promote investment for the steel sector.
