Nigeria on Saturday 17th May, 2025 joined the rest of the world to commemorate the 2025 World Telecommunication And Information Society Day (WTISD).
The occasion normally marked on the 17th of May every year, has the theme: "Gender Equality in Digital Transformation" for the 2025 celebration.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijan, briefed journalists to mark the occasion.
He was represented at the briefing by the Director National Frequency Management Council Secretariat, Engr. Adeyemo Adetunji Olugbenga.
The Minister said "I welcome you all distinguished guests to the celebration of The World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) 2025 marking the global recognition of ICT's role by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in fostering development
"The highlight of this year's theme is, "Gender Equality in Digital Transformation," emphasizing that inclusivity is critical for national progress
"The World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) was created to raise awareness of the benefits of the use of the Internet and ICT Technology and how Digital Innovations can help to connect the entire world and to unlock a sustainable prosperity, Digital Innovation can help to tackle the world's most pressing challenges, like the use of Al (Artificial Intelligence) to fight Climate change to eliminate poverty,"
Despite Nigeria's digital advancements gender gaps persisting particularly in smartphone ownership and access to digital opportunities, he noted that inspiring developments show Nigerian women excelling in fintech, healthtech, and edtech signaling a promising future.
"The Administration of His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, through the Ministry underscores the government's commitment to bridging this divide through key initiatives:
"National Gender Digital Inclusion Strategy (NGDIS) (2024-2027) to promote inclusivity and safe online spaces for women.
"Digital Skills Development, including the 3 Million Technical Talents (3MTT) Programme and Al research efforts
"Access to Funding, with government partnerships to provide financial support for women-led tech startups
"Strengthening Safe Digital Spaces, reinforcing cybersecurity and anti-harassment protections."
The Ministry, he said, calls for collective action beyond government intervention, as he urged private sector leaders, educational institutions, civil society, and individuals including men and boys to champion Inclusivity in the digital space.
"We are reaffirming Nigeria's commitment to a future where women and girls can fully participate in the digital economy, ensuring gender equality is not just an aspiration but a reality." he stated
