Joining the world to celebrate the 2025 World Teachers Day, the Federal Government of Nigeria has assured teachers in the country of improved welfare package.
This it said will promote partnership as key driver in boosting quality teaching and the country's educational sector.
The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, spoke in Abuja on Monday at a press conference and symposium to mark the 2025 celebrations.
It was themed "Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession”
The day which is usually marked annually on Oct. 5 is set aside to promote the ILO/UNESCO recommendation regarding the Status of Teachers (1966) and the UNESCO recommendation concerning the Status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel (1997).
Speaking on the theme of the celebration, Alausa stressed that collaboration among teachers was crucial to achieving quality education in a fast-changing, knowledge-driven world.
Stressing the significance of the theme, he harped on the importance of collaboration.
The Minister urged teachers to transform the profession from a solitary task into a dynamic community of practice.
“For too long, teaching has often been practiced in isolation, with each teacher confined to their classrooms, bearing the weight of the responsibility alone.
“Yet, we all know that the challenges of rapid technological change, the need for innovative pedagogy, equity gap, and demands for a knowledge-driven economy cannot be addressed by individual efforts alone.
“Collaboration among teachers transforms the profession from a solitary task into a dynamic community of practice.
“It allows teachers to share knowledge, experiences, and innovative strategies, mentor and support one another, particularly younger or less experienced colleagues, and jointly solve problems around curriculum delivery,” the minister said.
The Federal Ministry of Education, he said, has been creating structures in schools to encourage peer learning, mentorship as well as digital platforms to connect teachers across the country.
According to him, teachers remain the custodians of knowledge, builders of character, and architects of national development.
The minister canvassed for partnership among teachers saying when they work together, share experiences, mentor one another, and innovate collectively, students will be the ultimate beneficiaries of richer knowledge.
He commended the leadership of the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) and other education stakeholders, for their professionalism in teaching and adding value to the teaching profession.
“Good teachers equal excellent students, and excellent students become productive citizens who can compete globally.
” Nigerian students are excelling everywhere in the world because of the solid foundation laid by our teachers,” he said..
The minister of State for Education, Prof Suwaiba Said Ahmad, also stressed the importance of partnership among teachers
She urged them to strive for personal development and enrichment to improve themselves which translate to the students and pupils in the long run.
She called on teachers’ unions, school leaders, parents, communities, development partners, and the private sector to join hands in strengthening the profession through collaboration.
