Towards evacuating wounded soldiers from the frontlines, the Embassy of Ukraine in Nigeria has called for voluntary financial donations from the international community, friends of Ukraine and true lovers of peace for the development of a special robotic project known as "Allies of Steel,”
The robots would be deployed to carry out the function.
The Ukrainian Ambassador to Nigeria,
Ivan Kholostenko, made the appeal in Abuja at a charity fundraising event and the historic screening of “BUCHA,” for the first time in West Africa.
The movie captures the harrowing realities of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
He said the charity fundraising is aimed at galvanising funds to deploy life-saving robots to frontlines to not only evacuate wounded soldiers but be use also to deliver foods, ammunitions, as well as clear mines in dangerous combat zones.
"During this evening, we are organizing a charity fundrising for a very special project, “Allies of Steel”.
"These are ground robots designed to evacuate wounded soldiers from the battlefield, deliver food and ammunition, and clear mines.
"They are saving lives every day.
Every contribution matters. Even one dollar can help save a Ukrainian defender’s life.
"Tonight, every donor, no matter the amount, will receive a small token of gratitude as a symbol of friendship and solidarity between our peoples," Amb. Kholostenko said.
Ambassador Kholostenko further said that Ukraine and Africa, though distant geographically, share common struggles and aspirations for peace and freedom.
"Ukraine and Africa may be far apart on the map, but our hearts, our struggles, and our hopes are close.
"Let me express our heartfelt appreciation to all our allies who stand with Ukraine no matter how far we are on the map.
"Allies who support us in defending freedom and share our hope for peace. Our unity today is a beacon for the generations to come," he said.
On the movie "Bucha", the Ambassador said "today marks a special moment the film “Bucha” by Oleksandr Shchur and Stanislaw Tiunov will be screened for the first time in West Africa.
“Bucha” is a real life story about a small Ukrainian town which became a symbol of mass murder, brutality and atrocities, true face of Russian army.
"But “Bucha” is also a story about resilience. It shows how humanity, solidarity, and hope survive in the face of horror.
"Sadly, Russia’s neo-imperialistic actions in Ukraine are not an isolated case. The same neo-imperialism drives manipulation and violence in Africa.
"The methods are the same, to steal, to destroy, to share disinformation and instability. That is why we believe it is so important to show Africa the true face of Russian neo-colonialism," he concluded.
Also speaking, the newly appointed Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Lagos, Michel Fadi Issa, said "today, we gather not only to express our solidarity with the people of Ukraine, but also to reaffirm our shared commitment to peace, justice, and the sovereignty of nations.
"Ukraine’s story is one of courage, resilience, and unwavering determination. In the face of great adversity, its people have stood firm in defense of their freedom, their identity, and their democratic values.
"Their struggle serves as a powerful reminder to the world that liberty must never be taken for granted.
"As Nigerians and as members of the international community, it is our duty to continue supporting efforts that uphold human rights, safeguard sovereignty, and restore peace and stability in Ukraine and beyond.
"May the courage of the Ukrainian people inspire us all to work together with wisdom, compassion, and unity toward a future built on mutual respect and lasting peace".
