Alausa Launches Robotic Surgery Academy, Says Tinubu Invests Over N250bn In Medical Education

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, has launched the Redeemer's Health Village, RHV RoboMed Robotics Academy in Redemption City, Ogun State.

He described it as a major step in advancing President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda through human capital development.

Speaking at the unveiling of the Academy's Robotic Surgery Programme, Alausa said the initiative will expand access to advanced specialist training locally, enabling Nigerian surgeons to acquire emerging skills without travelling abroad.

He commended President Tinubu for sustained support for education, noting that over N250 billion has been invested in medical education to strengthen medical schools nationwide.

According to him, the investment covers medical simulation laboratories and rehabilitation of facilities, including hostels, across more than 24 medical schools.

Alausa, in a statement by Attah Ikharo, Special Adviser on Media and Communications, said government efforts must be complemented by private sector participation and diaspora expertise.

He described the RHV Academy as a model of how collaboration can translate technology into human capital development.

"Advanced medical equipment delivers its greatest value when professionals are adequately trained to use it competently, responsibly and in the best interests of patients," he said.

He urged the Academy to work with the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and other professional bodies to develop structured, approved training pathways, stressing that patient safety must remain central to robotic-assisted surgery.

The Minister also highlighted the Ministry's BRIDGE programme — Bridging Research, Innovation, Development and Global Engagement — being implemented with TETFund, which provides a platform for Nigerian professionals in the diaspora to contribute through teaching, mentorship and research.

He encouraged diaspora surgeons and educators to register on the BRIDGE portal.

Alausa assured that the Ministry will continue to promote partnerships among government, private sector, universities and diaspora professionals to expand quality training and retain highly skilled professionals in Nigeria.

Earlier, RHV Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Adedamola Dada, said the Academy will build local capacity in robotics, AI, automation, biomedical engineering and robotic-assisted healthcare, while supporting access to advanced minimally invasive surgical care.

The event featured training pathway presentations, signing of a training MoU involving Redeemer's Health Village, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, Redeemer's University and RoboMed Global, and a tour of facilities including robotic surgery and telesurgery simulation demonstration.
