The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to supporting peace and stability in Sudan, as well as strengthening bilateral relations between both countries.
He gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by the Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan to Nigeria, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Abdelaal, at the Ministry’s Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, 15 April 2026.
Ambassador Ahmed, according to a statement by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, noted that Nigeria and Sudan share longstanding historical and cultural ties rooted in centuries of interaction, migration, and mutual cooperation.
He emphasised that both countries remain closely connected, with shared interests in regional peace and development.
The Sudanese Ambassador, in his remarks, highlighted the deep-rooted relationship between the two nations and the strong integration of persons of Nigerian origin within Sudanese society.
He also briefed the Permanent Secretary on recent developments in Sudan, including ongoing recovery efforts in parts of the country affected by conflict.
While acknowledging the progress made in restoring stability in certain areas, the Sudanese envoy expressed concern over continued external interference and its implications for prolonged conflict and regional security.
Both sides underscored the importance of ending hostilities through dialogue and negotiation, noting that the crisis in Sudan has broader implications for peace and security across Africa, particularly within the Sahel region.
Ambassador Ahmed reiterated Nigeria’s active role within the African Union and the international community in advocating peaceful resolution of the crisis.
He stressed that sustainable peace can only be achieved through inclusive political processes and constructive engagement.
The meeting also explored avenues for strengthening bilateral cooperation, including the proposed convening of the Nigeria–Sudan Political Consultations Committee to address issues of mutual interest.
In addition, discussions covered the planned high-level visit by Sudanese leadership to Nigeria, as well as the need to protect Nigerian assets in Sudan and provide support for affected nationals.
The meeting concluded with both countries reaffirming their commitment to deepening diplomatic relations and working collaboratively towards peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
