Two suspected Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP terrorists have surrendered to Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) troops in Monguno Local Government Area, Borno State, as sustained military operations continue to weaken insurgents across the North East.
The surrender occurred at about 08:20pm on Monday to troops of Sector 3 in Monguno town, according to a statement by the Acting Military Information Officer, Captain Mohammed Goni.
The two men handed over:
2 AK-47 rifles
8 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition
2 magazines
Other items recovered include 4 Android phones, 1 button phone, earbuds, power bank, ATM card, memory card, USB cable, 2 head warmers and 1 bag.
Preliminary investigation revealed the two were among a group of 10 terrorists who fled an ISWAP camp at Arinna Chiki with the intention of surrendering to troops.
However, while en route, the group reportedly encountered an ISWAP patrol and there was an exchange of fire.
The whereabouts of the remaining 8 members could not be immediately ascertained. Troops have since intensified efforts to locate them and determine their status.
The surrendered terrorists, arms and other items are currently in the custody of Headquarters Sector 3 for further investigation and processing in line with extant procedures.
The Theatre Command said the latest surrender reflects the mounting pressure on terrorist elements as OPHK sustains operations across the Theatre.
“The Theatre Command OPHK continues to encourage terrorists willing to abandon violence to surrender to troops and embrace the opportunity provided to return to peaceful life,” the statement said.
It added that troops remain vigilant and committed to sustaining military pressure against terrorists who choose to continue their campaign of violence, while protecting communities and restoring lasting peace across the theatre.
