FG Commissions 100MVA Transformer at Alausa Substation, Boosting Bulk Power for Ikeja with 80MW

The Federal Government has commissioned a new 100MVA, 132/33kV power transformer at the Alausa 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Lagos.

This is expected to boost electricity supply to the state’s seat of government and key commercial hubs.

The commissioning was performed by the Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Tegbe, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Minister Tegbe said the intervention replaces an ageing 30MVA transformer with a modern 100MVA unit, increasing the substation’s total installed capacity from 135MVA to 205MVA — equivalent to approximately 164MW.

“More importantly, it has increased the quantum of bulk power available to Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, IKEDC by 80MW for onward delivery to consumers within its franchise area,” he said.

He described Alausa as “the nerve centre of governance in Lagos State and one of the most economically consequential corridors in our nation,” serving government institutions, industrial estates, markets, and millions of residents.

“The significance is beyond another engineering project milestone. It is a strategic investment in Ikeja... where the ambition of Nigeria meets the industrious nature of Nigerians,” Tegbe said.

The Minister said the project reflects President Tinubu’s determination to confront infrastructure constraints limiting Nigeria’s economic potential.

“Our approach is deliberate: Identify the bottleneck. Invest in it. Remove the constraint. Unlock the capacity,” he stated, adding that more substations across the country require rehabilitation and expansion to meet growing demand.

He commended TCN for undertaking the upgrade, NISO for ensuring grid coordination, IKEDC for its role in distribution, and Shanghai Electric Group Company Limited which executed the project.

He also acknowledged the World Bank and the Lagos State Government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for their support.

The Minister formally commissioned the 1×100MVA, 132/33kV power transformer and associated facilities at Alausa Transmission Substation.

He assured that the administration “remains firmly committed to the transformation of Nigeria's electricity sector” and will continue to invest across the power value chain.

In his welcome address, TCN Managing Director/CEO, Engr. Sule A. Abdulaziz, said the new transformer increases substation capacity by 70MVA and will deliver more stable power to at least 70,000 residents across Alausa and environs through IKEDC.

He noted the project was executed by Messrs Shanghai Electric Ltd under a World Bank-funded initiative that commenced in January 2021.

“Beyond serving the immediate community, this upgrade meaningfully increases the quantum of bulk power that TCN can wheel to distribution load centres nationwide. It reinforces grid stability,” Abdulaziz said.

He added that the achievement aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda and reflects the Minister’s “visionary leadership and guidance.”
